Sometimes, to be sure, that cannot be done immediately: to prove the existence of even one example might need more of the theory than the mere definition reveals. When we first learn about transcendental numbers, for instance, it is not at all obvious that such things exist. Just the opposite happens when we are first told about measurable sets.
